Orthognathic surgery is a type of jaw surgery which is especially designed to correct some dental problems like misalignment of jaw and facial disorders. Some persons suffer from problem like overgrowth of jaw, jaw coming outside, bad bite, TMJ disorders that are not treated alone with the help of braces. So the person can undergo this surgery to renovate their facial problems.
It is a kind of jaw surgery which is done to rectify misalignment of jaw and fix them in their proper position. The surgery is generally performed under general anesthesia. In this surgery doctor cut the jaw bone and make them realigned. They either remove the extra jaw bone or add bone so that jaw fits in their proper position. Now the surgery is done with much more advanced surgery tools and machines which has made the surgery much simpler with reduced pain and shorter recovery period. With the invention of more advanced machines and tools and new surgery technique it is safe to undergo Orthognathic surgery with minimum cuts and stitches.
Many people undergo this surgery to improve their facial appearance as overgrowth of teeth or jaw or improper arrangement of teeth or jaw makes their facial look a bad appearance. Along with that it also rectifies many other dental problems such as bad bite, chewing difficulties like in biting and swallowing, outsized chins, speech problems, excessive number of teeth, pain in jaw, flat cheekbones etc. The surgery mainly aims to provide a normal bite and face to the person giving a better look. The surgery is also done to treat sleep apnea disorder by enlarging the airways.
A patient can be recovered within six weeks after surgery. But proper care should be done after surgery. Patient should take only liquid diets and soft foods only for few weeks after surgery.
